The Story of Slice of Cornwall Ltd

Oliver is a chef and has been for many years, Sophie comes from a creative background and is the current visual merchandiser, creating content for the social media, website and in store retail chain. Their respective experience and skills were the perfect match for Slice of Cornwall. Experimenting with different recipes was something they both loved to do, Sophie created their best seller “Raow II” (An amazing chicken waffle dish, we highly recommend trying this by the way).

Finding the work / life balance with a young family, the popularity and menu grew. The time soon came to expand and develop the menu and brand further. With this development came the food they love to make and eat that forms the menu at Slice of Cornwall. Parts of the menu, such as the sourdough is manufactured on site, by the team in house and the menu continues to expand and develop. Truly amazing achievements for a Cornish brand.

The “Challenge” that Slice of Cornwall faced

8 years ago, with the brand was going from strength to strength, Oliver and Sophie found themselves juggling the trial and expansion of the menu, with growth within their team and the need to move to new premises. A lot for any business owner, a huge amount of time was being spent trying to work out the financials of the business and when the best time for the new investments would be.

Despite having an incumbent accountant at this time, there were loads of ideas and thoughts running through Oliver and Sophies brain, having reached out to Alex at Howards Accountants, they booked a meeting to talk through their vision and what the future could look like for them. Reacting to the ever-changing needs of the business and knowing what was possible in the future and how they could achieve it, was top of the agenda.

“In honesty as the numbers got bigger the scarier, they seemed. We were being financially careful; we wanted someone who understood what the numbers in the business meant. From the first meeting with Alex, we knew we had met someone we could trust, we walked away clearer than we had ever been about our finances and more importantly about our goals and how to achieve them”.

“Alex knew more than other people we had spoken to and this gave us the confidence we needed for the next steps, that relationship is still true today”.

How Howards Accountants Responded

With running the business and juggling a young family, the Payroll and bookkeeping were of a size where completing along with running the other areas of the business was becoming too much, and these were the first services transferred to Howards Accountants. It soon became clear that with the growth, the VAT submissions were becoming more complex and taking more time, Howards Accountants managed the processing and submission on behalf of Slice and continue to process the returns to this day. This allowed Oliver and Sophie to concentrate on the other important areas of the business. The business had grown so much, and the requirements changed so significantly and so the Limited company was set up by Howards Accountants. “We didn’t realise how important the change in accountants was until we had done it, it genuinely felt like a weight off our shoulders after speaking with Howards Accountants, the support and advice gave us confidence, and it was a massive relief”.
